SITE VISITS

Bath
Unesco City of Bath

The City of Bath is famous for its hot springs, Roman Baths and 18th Century neo-classical architecture and planning. There is a new spa where you can swim in the natural, hot spring waters, like the Romans did 2000 years ago!

People, societies and cities change. But with 5,000 historic buildings, change is difficult in Bath. Is modern architecture and development possible? Is Bath a city or a museum? Does it need restoration, preservation or conservation?

You will visit the Roman Baths, 18th Century streets, museums and redevelopment sites. You will discuss the issues with local experts and residents.

Stonehenge
Unesco Stonehenge and Avebury

Stonehenge is one of the most famous monuments in the world, and Avebury is an even more extraordinary landscape. 4,000 years ago people created huge structures and landscapes. It is not clear why, or how, they were built.

Stonehenge is “a national disgrace”. Roads cut across the site, parking is difficult, and there is no visitor centre. A medieval village sits on top of Avebury. Management must meet the needs of the Site, the local community, the national road network and international visitors.

You will visit the major sites, explore the surrounding landscapes, and talk to experts and visitors about the complex heritage management issues. You will picnic* in the Neolithic landscape.

Jurassic Coast
Unesco Jurassic Coast

The cliffs of Dorset and East Devon ‘Jurassic Coast’ show a sequence of rock formations that span the Mesozoic Era - 185 million years of Earth history. The coast’s fossil sites, features and ‘geodiversity’ have inspired Earth Science for 300 years.

Geodiversity, like biodiversity, is affected by human activity. Conservation issues here include: natural erosion; erosion caused by some fossil and specimen collectors; protecting roads and buildings; bringing together different monitoring systems.

You will visit Golden Cap, the highest cliff, and the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, where you will picnic and collect fossils on the beach*. You will also visit Lyme Regis, where heritage is at the heart of regeneration.
*weather and tides permitting!!!
